Recent Update: Student Visa Processing by Immigration New Zealand

Kia ora!

We are excited to share some important updates regarding the student visa processing from Immigration New Zealand (INZ). INZ has made significant strides in enhancing the efficiency of student visa applications, and we believe this will greatly benefit prospective students looking to study in New Zealand.

Processing Efficiency Improvements

In 2024, INZ processed an impressive 10,000 more student visa applications than in 2023, and the average processing time was reduced to just 19 days—a remarkable 40% faster than the previous December. As of the end of 2024, INZ had only 5,100 applications pending, which is nearly half of what was on hand a year prior.

To achieve these improvements, INZ implemented several initiatives:

  • Increased Staffing: 30 additional staff members were dedicated to student visa processing.
  • Collaboration with Education Providers: INZ worked closely with educational institutions to monitor the offers of place granted to students.
  • Proactive Communication: Stakeholders were engaged extensively to encourage students to apply at least three months before their intended travel date.

New Processing Approach

Starting in February, INZ will implement a new processing strategy that groups similar applications. This approach is based on a successful model used for the Accredited Employer Work Visa scheme and aims to further streamline the application process.

The grouping of applications may include:

  • Applications from students already in New Zealand seeking a further student visa while changing their course or provider.
  • Applications for students studying the same course or with the same education provider.
  • Applications with complete or incomplete information.
  • Applications submitted on time, but for courses starting soon.

Details on how applications will be grouped will be published and regularly updated on the INZ website.

The Importance of Timely Applications

Despite the positive developments, INZ emphasizes the importance of applying early. Education providers have reported a surge in interest in studying in New Zealand, but there is a concern about potential late applications. Students are reminded that to ensure their visa is processed in time, they should aim to apply at least three months before their course starts.

If a student has submitted their visa application but it has not been processed by their course start date, it is advisable for the education provider to issue an updated offer of place. This confirmation can be uploaded to Immigration Online to help prevent delays in the application assessment.

Conclusion

With these updates from INZ, prospective students can look forward to a more efficient student visa application process. We encourage all students considering studying in New Zealand to act promptly and apply well in advance to secure their study plans.
