Australia Visa Fees Just Went Up from 1 July 2026: What Applicants Need to Know

If you’re planning to study, work, or migrate to Australia, there’s an important update you shouldn’t miss.

The Australian Government has officially increased Visa Application Charges (VACs) across most visa categories from 1 July 2026. These revised fees apply to visa applications lodged on or after 1 July 2026 and affect international students, skilled workers, graduates, families, and permanent residency applicants.

For many applicants, this means higher upfront costs, making it even more important to lodge the right application the first time.

Why Have Australian Visa Fees Increased?

Every year, the Australian Government reviews visa application charges. Most visa fees are adjusted in line with inflation and government policy. However, the 2026 increase is more significant for several popular visa categories, particularly student and graduate visas.

Industry bodies have expressed concerns that the continued increase in visa costs could make Australia less competitive compared to countries like Canada, the UK and New Zealand when attracting international students.

Major Australia Visa Fee Changes from 1 July 2026

Below are some of the most notable changes:

Student Visa Fee Now AUD $2,500

One of the biggest changes affects international students.

The Student Visa (Subclass 500) application fee has increased from AUD $2,000 to AUD $2,500, making Australia one of the most expensive destinations globally in terms of student visa application charges.

This increase follows another substantial fee rise introduced in previous years, meaning student visa costs have more than tripled over a relatively short period.

Separate Visa Pricing for English Language (ELICOS) Students

A new fee structure has also been introduced for students enrolling solely in English language (ELICOS) courses.

Applicants for standalone ELICOS programs will now pay AUD $2,050 instead of the standard student visa charge, creating a separate pricing category for these applicants.

Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) Now Costs AUD $5,750

Graduates planning to remain in Australia after completing their studies should also be aware of another significant increase.

The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) now starts from AUD $5,750, following an earlier fee increase implemented in March 2026.

This is one of the highest visa application charges among Australia’s temporary visa programs.

What Does This Mean for Future Applicants?

The increase in visa fees means applicants should plan their finances more carefully than ever before.

Before submitting your visa application, make sure you:

  • Budget for higher government application charges.
  • Prepare complete and accurate documentation.
  • Meet all Genuine Student, Genuine Temporary Entrant (where applicable), financial and English language requirements.
  • Seek professional advice if your case is complex.

A visa refusal not only results in the loss of a significant application fee but may also affect future visa applications.

Should You Still Choose Australia?

Absolutely.

Although visa costs have increased, Australia continues to offer:

  • Globally recognised universities
  • Excellent graduate employment opportunities
  • Post-study work rights
  • Strong skilled migration pathways
  • High quality of life
  • Excellent long-term career prospects

For many students and skilled professionals, the long-term return on investment still outweighs the increased visa application costs.
