Which SELT Exam Should You Take?

UKVI-approved Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for. Choosing the right exam ensures you meet the English language requirements set by UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI).

There are two main categories of SELT exams:

SELT for Study & Work Visas

If you are applying for a UK Student Visa or a Skilled Worker Visa, you need to take a test that assesses all four language skills Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. These exams are designed to evaluate your overall proficiency in English to ensure you can study or work effectively in an English-speaking environment.

Academic Tests (IELTS for UKVI Academic, PTE Academic UKVI, TOEFL iBT for UKVI) are required for students applying to universities and colleges in the UK.

General Training Tests (IELTS for UKVI General) are often needed for work visas or migration.

SELT for UK Spouse, Citizenship & Family Visas

For visas such as Spouse Visa, Family Visa, UK Settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain – ILR), and British Citizenship, only Speaking & Listening skills are tested. These exams are shorter and focus on basic communication skills.
